News from NC Department of Health and Human Services

Governor Cooper and Secretary Cohen have announced that beginning on March 17, people in Group 4 who have a medical condition that puts them at higher risk and people who live in additional congregate settings will be eligible for vaccination. The rest of Group 4, which includes other essential workers will become eligible April 7th.

North Carolina follows the recommendations of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as to who is at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19, such as asthma, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, sickle cell disease, obesity, or smoking. (A complete list is available in our Deeper Dive.) In addition, this population includes anyone who is living in higher risk congregate or close group living settings who is not already vaccinated including, people experiencing homelessness or living in a homeless shelter and people in a correctional facility, such as jail or prison.

More information can be found online in our Deeper Dive Group 4: Adults at Higher Risk of Exposure and Increased Risk of Severe Illness (Higher-Risk Conditions and Additional Congregate Settings) https://files.nc.gov/covid/documents/vaccines/Deeper-Dive-Group-4-Higher-Risk-Conditions.pdf

Currently eligible groups – health care workers, long-term care staff and residents, people 65 and older, and child care and school staff – will continue to be prioritized. Some vaccine providers may not be ready to open to people with a medical condition on March 17 if they are still experiencing high demand for vaccines in Groups 1, 2, and 3.

Orange County, NC Launches New Online Registration System for the COVID-19 Vaccine Registration

News from Orange County Health Department

Orange County Health Department is unveiling a new online registration system for residents seeking to sign up for a COVID-19 vaccine. The new system will allow residents to choose how to be notified when an appointment is available—either via text, automated phone call or email—and will help the county manage the process to ensure that all vaccines are distributed efficiently.

The system will go live on Tuesday, March 9, and will replace the county’s existing form. It may be accessed at the same link as the previous form: https://redcap.link/OCHDvax. Residents who have already registered, either via phone or the online form, will not have to re-register. Their information will be migrated into the new system.

“The automated system will help the county manage the COVID vaccine distribution more effectively,” said Orange County Health Director Quintana Stewart. “We hope to receive more vaccines as supply increases, and this system will help us distribute them quickly.”

Residents are asked to save (919) 913-8088 and covid19vaccine@orangecountync.gov as trusted contacts to avoid the calls and emails being treated as spam.

Individuals who can’t access the Internet or need assistance filling out the form can register by calling (919) 913-8088 seven days a week, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Spanish and other languages are available.

“This is yet another tool in our toolbox aimed at ensuring the vaccination process is as efficient, effective, and equitable as possible,” said Orange County Emergency Services Director Kirby Saunders. “We are proud of everyone who has worked tirelessly to get this operational while also continuing to manage the ongoing vaccination process.”

Individuals who have previously registered but have received the vaccine from another provider will be able to remove themselves from the list by choosing that option when contacted.

Individuals who are eligible to receive the COVID vaccine will be notified when appointments become available based on their place in line. When you receive a notice that an appointment is available, you must respond quickly to guarantee your spot. Spots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you are unable to make the appointment based on the time or location, or you do not respond before all slots are filled, you will remain in the queue and will be notified the next time appointments are available.

If you get the vaccine from another provider, you can opt out of future notifications and be removed from the system.

The Covid-19 Vaccination: Make an Informed Decision

An event co-sponsored by the Orange County Health Department

Join us on Saturday, March 13 at 3 p.m. for a virtual panel discussion, "The COVID-19 Vaccination: Make An Informed Decision."

During this program, you will hear from a panel of four physicians, scientists, and public health professionals as they provide relevant data, along with details of their frontline efforts and experiences to help you make decisions about the COVID-19 vaccine for you and your families, as well as tips on how to remain safe as we continue in this pandemic. The purpose of this webinar will be to assist participants with a plan of action when faced with making a decision about getting the COVID-19 vaccination and to provide more culturally appropriate answers to the questions that many communities of color have about the COVID-19 vaccinations.

This program is being co-sponsored by the Mu Omicron Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Chapel Hill-Carrboro Branch of NAACP, and the Orange County Health Department.
