| SINGING
IN THE RAIN (1952) |
|
One of the most-loved and celebrated film musicals
of all time! The joyous film, co-directed by Stanley
Donen and acrobatic dancer-star-choreographer Gene Kelly,
is a charming, up-beat, graceful and thoroughly enjoyable
experience with great songs, lots of flashbacks, wonderful
dances (including the spectacular Broadway Melody Ballet
with leggy guest star Cyd Charisse), casting and story.
This was another extraordinary example of the organic,
'integrated musical' in which the story's characters
naturally express their emotions in the midst of their
lives. Song and dance replace the dialogue, usually
during moments of high spirits or passionate romance.
And over half of the film - a 'let's put on a play'
type of film, is composed of musical numbers.

by Carrboro Cybrary
Small is Possible: Life in a Local Economy
by Lyle Estill
The Community Book Forum series brings our community
together to discuss important issues and ideas. We encourage
the community to read a book and consider its relevance
to and implications for our community and our society
at large. We want to hear your thoughts and ideas at
our forum event where discussion of the book will be
led by expert panelists.
This summer, we will discuss what it takes to live
life in a local economy. Lyle Estill, co-founder of
Piedmont Biofuels, will discuss the local economy in
Chatham County that has allowed their citizens to feed
themselves, fuel themselves, heal themselves, and govern
themselves. This discussion will be valuable to anyone
interested in sustainability, co-ops, biodiesel, whole
foods, slow food, small business, and more.

Nature Preserve consists of 295 acres. It is one of Triangle
Land Conservancy's (TLC) public access properties and
is considered one of Orange County's most important natural
areas and was included in the Inventory of Natural Areas
and Wildlife Habitats of Orange County. New Hope Creek
cuts through the Northwest corner of the site and is joined

is a well marked 1.5 mile Robin's Trail with bridges over
Old Field Creek and intermittent streams. We will look

GET INVOLVED
Much of the vitality of life in Carrboro is due to the
active involvement of citizens in the community. Volunteers
of all ages regularly
share their talents, skills, and ideas by planning or
assisting with large events, serving on town advisory
boards, or coaching a youth sports team. While some
activities require the contribution of many hours others
call for only a few hours of time. Not only can you
share your talents, you can have fun, make new friends
and discover more about your town.
