| THE
HUNCHBACK OF NORTE DAME (1923; silent) |
|
Publicly lashed for trying to abduct the lovely Esmeralda
(Patsy Ruth Miller), grotesque bell-ringer Quasimodo
(Lon Chaney) comes to love the gypsy girl after she
alone takes pity on him. When Esmeralda is later unjustly
sentenced to death, Quasimodo rushes to her rescue,
taking her to Notre Dame Cathedral where he defends
her by raining stone blocks and molten lead on the crowds
below. Chaney's great performance made him a major film
star. Erich Lieth will be improvising an original score
live on the grand piano.

(2002; Italian) |
|
On the island of Lampedusa, near Sicily, life can be
as suffocating as it is charming. Grazia (Valeria
Golino) is the loving young mother of three children,
but, much like the sea surrounding her island, Grazia
can also be unpredictable and stormy. Although her free
spirit causes talk, Grazia's husband lovingly stands
by her in the face of small-town gossip. But as her
behavior becomes more reckless, even her family's love
can't protect her.

It takes an illness with a bleak prognosis to break
open 23-year-old Anne's (Sarah Polley) longing for a
better life. A mother of two stuck in a dead-end job,
Anne has received nothing but grief from her troubled
parents and her slacker husband (Scott Speedman). But
when she finds out she's dying, she makes a list of
things she wants to accomplish: get acrylic nails, sleep
with another man and, best of all, realize her true
potential.
